R2R Summer Preview – May

This week we will be previewing what movies the summer of 2011 will have to offer us we will preview one month each day starting with May and ending in August.  Every important detail of every major release will be covered so that you will be able to maximize your summer movie-going experience.  Hit the jump to see what May has to offer.

Fast Five

Release Date: April 29th (Yes, I know it’s not in May but it’s a proven blockbuster franchise and the date is close enough)

Starring:Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Elsa Pataky, Joaquim de Almeida, Dwayne Johnson

Premise: Ever since Brian O’Connor (Walker) and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke her brother Dom (Diesel) out prison, they have been on the run and have landed in Brazil.  Their luck begins to run out and are forced to assemble a team of elite racers to pull off one last job to gain their freedom.  The mission soon becomes a lot more harder to pull off when the team realizes that they are not only being chased by a corrupt business man, but an FBI agent (Johnson) who will stop at nothing to bring the team to justice.

Expectations: Like it was previously mentioned, this franchise has already established itself as a series that always puts butts in the theaters and brings in a great deal of money every time a new installment is released.  Bringing back almost every player from all the previous films as well as the addition of Dwayne Johnson only helps its chances to be a high-grossing film.  Look for it to have a massive opening weekend money-wise.

Release Date: May 6th

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson

Premise: After his careless and reckless actions ignite a war in his home world of Asgard, Thor (Hemsworth) is banished to earth by his father Odin (Hopkins).  While there he meets a scientist named Jane Foster (Portman) and quickly falls for her.  However, when Earth is attacked by the same forces as Asgard, Thor must quickly learn what it means to be a hero and save Earth.

Expectations: Thor already has the normal hype that comes with most superhero films.  However, early screenings of the film indicate that is may be better than just an average superhero film and may end up being a surprise sleeper once summer is over.

Something Borrowed

Release Date: May 6th

Starring: Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, John Krasinski, Steve Howey

Premise: Rachel (Goodwin) and Darcy (Hudson) have been life long friends but where Darcy has been lucky in love and is engaged, Rachel is not.  After one night of a little too much to drink, Rachel wakes up in bed with Darcy’s fiancee, who she has had a crush on for years.  Now the girl’s friendship becomes extremely complicated and could lead to horrible revelations.

Expectations: The film has an alright cast and should definitely bring in the female crowd who hasn’t been dragged to Thor by their boyfriends and husbands that weekend.  However, a film like this will be quickly passed over and become an afterthought after it’s first week.

Release Date: May 13th

Starring: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd, Matt Lucas, Jill Clayburgh, Rebel Wilson, Michael Hitchcock

Premise: Annie’s (Wiig) life has become one big mess.  She’s broke and has essentially no love life.  So when her best friend Lillian (Rudolph) becomes engaged, Annie has no choice but to be her maid of honor and does her best to bluff through the expensive and odd rituals associated with her duty.  However, with only one shot at getting it all right, Annie takes Lillian and her other bridesmaids through a wild ride to prove how far she’ll go for someone she loves.

Expectations: At first look, the film doesn’t look like much.  However, the cast is filled with funny ladies who can together carry this movie.  It also doesn’t hurt that Judd Apatow (40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up) produced it either.  Look for Bridesmaids to be very funny like previous Apatow films and receive good reviews but not to have too much staying power in the box office.

Release Date: May 13th

Starring: Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Steven Moyer, Brad Dourif, Christopher Plummer

Premise: Priest (Bettany) is a legendary warrior from the last Vampire war that took place on a post-apocalyptic earth.  He now lives among everyone else in walled-in cities controlled by the church.  When his niece (Collins) is captured by a pack of vampires Priest, his niece’s boyfriend (Gigandet) and a Priestess (Maggie Q), head out on to a journey to find her before she becomes a vampire herself

Expectations: The premise of this film will bring in fans of monster and apocalyptic movies.  However, that may be the only that find this graphic novel adaptation appealing.  Look for is to have a decent opening weekend but don’t be surprised if it bombs.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Release Date: May 20th

Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Kevin R. McNally, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Sam Claflin, Geoffrey Rush

Premise: Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) is back and much like before, he has gotten himself in trouble again and has to find a way out.  While on his way attempting to discover The Fountain of Youth crosses paths with an old comrade, Angelina (Cruz).  She then forces Jack aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge” which is run by the dreaded pirate Blackbeard (McShane)Jack then finds himself on an adventure where the only person he can trust is himself if he plans to get out alive.

Expectations: This is another franchise that has proven that it will being people in regardless of what it has to offer.  Depp will no doubt be great again as the eccentric Sparrow.  Hopefully this installment will be better than it’s last two and be more like the original film that was greatly entertaining.

The Hangover Part II

Release Date: May 26th

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Jeffrey Tambor, Mike Tyson, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong, Bryan Callen, Nick Cassavetes

Premise: This Wolfpack is back and this time around Phil (Cooper), Stu (Helms), Alan (Galifianakis) and Doug (Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s weddingStu’s hopes for a more subdued bachelor party are soon shot down as Phil, Stu and Alan again wake up to have no recollection of what happened the previous night.  Not only that, they’ve lost Stu’s fiancee’s brother as well.

Expectations: The Hangover was one of the funniest films of the past decade and from the initial clips released from this sequel, The Hangover Part II will be just as funny and maybe even funnier.  There is hesitation however, that the sequel will just be a regurgitation of the original classicOnly time will tell however.

Kung Fu Panda II

Release Date: May 26th

Starring: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Michelle Yeoh

Premise: Life is good for Po (Black).  Him and the Furious Five – Tigress, Crane, Viper, Monkey  and Mantis – protect their home, the Valley of Peace with great easeHowever, when a new villain emerges with a weapon strong enough to destroy the very existence of kung fu, Po and Furious Five must travel through China to find that evil and vanquish it before it is too late.

Expectations: Expectations weren’t very high upon the release of the original film.  So expectations for this sequel are very high.  The question is, with The Hangover Part II releasing the same weekend, who will come out on top?  This weekend will definitely be the most exciting in May.

Check back tomorrow for what’s coming out in June!
