Oscars 2011: Countdown to the Throw Down: Best Actress/Best Song/Best Original Screenplay

Another day, we are once again one day closer to the Oscars.  With each day getting closer, the anticipation is starting to skyrocket, and once again, we are looking at three categories. Today, it is time to look at Best Actress, Best Original Song, and Best Original Screenplay.

Best Actress

The Nominees are:

–          Annette Benning – The Kids Are All Right
–          Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole
–          Jennifer Lawrence – Winter’s Bone
–          Natalie Portman – Black Swan
–          Michelle Williams – Blue Valentine

How it All Works Out…According to Monty

This is Natalie’s award to lose.  Portman has been able to win all the big awards so far this year, and the Oscars are an opportunity for her to really define herself as one of the best actresses currently in Hollywood.  Looking at the rest of the nominees, there is no one that can even give Portman a challenge.  Benning won the Golden Globe for Best Actress Comedy/Musical, and I hope she really enjoys that, because she won’t be touching the Oscar on Sunday.  For all of Portman’s fans (including myself), the actress (hopefully) winning the award should be a sight.

Bryan’s Winner by default – Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Bryan’s Winner if Hell Freezes Over – Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Bryan’s Winner if the Academy Pulls its Head out of its Ass – Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Andy’s Winner – Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Andy’s Sleeper Pick – Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole

Emily’s Winner – Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Jim’s Winner – Natalie Portman – Black Swan

Best Original Song

The Nominees Are:

–          “Coming Home” – Country Stong
–          “I See the Light” – Tangled
–          “If I Rise” – 127 Hours
–          “We Belong Together” – Toy Story 3

How it All Works Out…According to Monty

I have absolutely no idea who is going to win this award.  Listening to all four songs, my best guess is that the song from Toy Story 3 is the front-runner at this point.  None of the songs really have that knock out power that usual award winners have, but it seems that “We Belong Together” has just enough to bring it over the hump and take it home.  I’m not counting out “If I Rise” though.  Songs from Danny Boyle films tend to have good momentum moving into the awards ceremony.

Bryan’s Winner by Default – “We Belong Together” – Toy Story 3

Bryan’s Winner if Hell Freezes Over – “If I Rise” – 127 Hours

Bryan’s Winner if the Academy Pulls its Head out of its Ass – “We Belong Together” – Toy Story 3

Andy’s Winner – “We Belong Together” – Toy Story 3

Andy’s Sleeper Pick – “I See the Light” – Tangled

Emily’s Winner – “We Belong Together” – Toy Story 3

Best Original Screenplay

The Nominees Are:

–          Another Year
–          The Fighter
–          Inception
–          The Kids Are All Right
–          The King’s Speech

How it All Breaks Down…According to Monty

Screenplays come down to how a writer’s vision is transfigured on the screen.  In this case, I strongly believe that the best film in this list is Inception.  Devid Seidler might get the award because The King’s Speech is catching so much heat late in the game, but all of those that are upset because of Nolan’s Best Director shaft might be pleasantly surprised with the Original Screenplay.

Bryan’s Winner by Default – Inception

Bryan’s Winner if Hell Freezes Over – The King’s Speech

Bryan’s Winner if the Academy Pulls their Heads out of their Ass – Inception

Andy’s Winner – The Fighter

Andy’s Sleeper Pick – Inception

Emily’s Winner – The Fighter

Jim’s Winner – Inception

Make sure you keep it locked in tomorrow as we take a look at adapted screenplay and the sound awards!
