Oscars 2011: Countdown to the Throw Down – Director, Visual Effects & Original Score

Today we continue our countdown to the biggest night in cinema, the Oscars.  Today’s categories are Directing, Visual Effects & Original Score.  To see the picks of the staff and a breakdown of each category, hit the jump below.  Also don’t forget to tell us what you think by taking the poll after each category!!!

Best Directing

And the Nominees Are:

–          David O. Russell – The Fighter
–          Darren Aronofsky – Black Swan
–          Joel & Ethan Coen – True Grit
–          David Fincher – The Social Network
–          Tom Hooper – The King’s Speech

How it all breaks down…According to Andy:

Talk about a stacked category.  Every single one of these director’s has put together a fantastic film.  It really is hard to pick one of them as better than all of the rest.  There has been a great amount of buzz for David Fincher’s The Social Network.  However, The King’s Speech as a whole has gained quite a bit of steam as award season has progressed and seems to be a front runner for many awards.  Don’t be surprised if it steals a couple of awards including this one.

Andy’s Pick -David Fincher – The Social Network

Andy’s Sleeper Pick – Tom Hooper – The King’s Speech

Bryan’s Pick by Default – David Fincher – The Social Network

Bryan’s Pick if Hell Freezes Over – Christopher Nolan – Inception (I know he’s not nominated)

Bryan’s Pick if the Academy Pulls their Head out of their A** – Christopher Nolan – Inception

Emily’s Pick – David Fincher – The Social Network

Jim’s Pick – David Fincher – The Social Network

Best Visual Effects

And the Nominees Are….

–          Alice in Wonderland
–          Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
–          Hereafter
–          Inception
–          Iron Man 2

How it all breaks down…According to Andy:

Outside of Hereafter, this is another stacked category.  These films had beautiful visual effects, but Iron Man 2‘s weren’t nearly as good as its predecessor.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 had the best visual effects out of all the installments.  However when it comes down to it, this is a two horse race.  Alice in Wonderland was majority visual effects and they weren’t anything short of dazzling and when it comes to Inception,  all that needs to be said is you can’t help but watch that film and say wow.

Andy’s Pick – Alice in Wonderland

Andy’s Sleeper Pick – Inception

Bryan’s Pick – Inception

Emily’s Pick – Inception

Best Original Score

And the Nominees Are:

–          127 Hours
–          How to Train Your Dragon
–          Inception
–          The King’s Speech
–          The Social Network

How it all breaks down…According to Andy:

Now I’m no music expert but I have heard that The Social Network is the front runner for this award like many of the awards it is nominated for.  Personally, Inception had a great original score and so did How to Train Your Dragon, but again I only study movies and music is not my expertise.

Andy’s Pick – The Social Network

Andy’s Sleeper Pick – Inception

Bryan’s Pick – The Social Network

Emily’s Pick – The Social Network
