Box Office Predictions: February 18-20

Presidents Day weekend is bringing us three new releases this week, I Am Number Four, Unknown and Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.  Will any of these three be able to take the top of the box office away from Bieber or Sandler?  Find out after the jump.

Andy’s Take

This weekend is going to be very interesting to say the least.  Last weekend the top two films were separated by less than a million dollars.  Just Go With It and Never Say Never have very two very popular people in them and if last week proved anything, it’s that there is a massive audience for both of the films stars.  Those stars being Adam Sandler and Justin Bieber, respectively.  This weekend offers some films that look to have what it takes to take the top from last weeks #1 and #2.  I Am Number Four is one of these three.  The film, based of a novel James Frey and Jobie Hughes, tells the story of a boy who is one of nine survivors of an extinct alien race being hunted by the enemy of that race in the small town he currently lives in.  The film is directed by DJ Caruso (Disturbia) and looks to be gaining recognition as we get closer to the weekend.  The second release this week is Unknown starring Liam Neeson (Taken, Clash of the Titans).  The film follows Neeson as Biochemist who travels Berlin with his wife but after only a little time there he is sent in to a coma after a car accident.  He wakes up four days later only to find out his wife doesn’t know who is anymore and there are assassins who want him dead.  Neeson must find out a way to get old wife back while at the same time avoiding being caught and killed.  From the looks of the trailers, this looks like another film where Liam Neeson just kicks butt the whole time.  So if Taken is any indication to how this film will do, it will do just fine and many will go see it.  The third and final release is the unanticipated Big Momma: Like Father, Like Son again starring Martin Lawrence.  This time around, Lawrence and his son in the film must go undercover in an all-girls school to solve a murder.  I would say this film doesn’t have a chance but yet again, people came out to see the second Big Momma so there is an audience for these films.  My predictions are: (New Films in Bold, click on the movies title for the trailer):

1 ) Unknown 31.4 Million

2 ) I Am Number Four – 29.6 Million

3 ) Gnomeo & Juliet – 19 Million

4 ) Big Momma’s: Like Father, Like Son – 17.8 Million

5 ) Just Go With It – 16.4 Million

6 ) Never Say Never – 14.7 Million

7 ) The Eagle – 7.4 Million

8 ) The King’s Speech – 6.2 Million

9 ) No Strings Attached – 4.8 Million

10) The Roommate – 4.2 Million
