Retro Review: Miracle

By: Emily Kellas
Rating: 8 out of 10

With the summer Olympics taking over most American’s TV screens, iPhone’s, and Facebook news feeds, this week I thought I would return to Retro Reviews with an inspiring sports classic. I will freely admit that I am not the world’s foremost expert on sports films. But I do have a few that stand out in my mind as “Emily Classics.” I have seen Remember the Titans more times than I can count, I can’t watch baseball without thinking about A League of Their Own, and every time I mini golf I can’t stop quoting Caddyshack. But the one movie that stands out, as my favorite sports movie is a recent classic, Miracle. I realize that this Disney live action film is not truly “retro” with its 2004 release date, nor is it the cream of the crop when it comes to its competition like Raging Bull and Field of Dreams. But like most of our summer Olympic athletes, this film has what its subjects had, heart.

Brave Review

By: Emily Kellas

Rating: 7 out of 10

When word of Disney/Pixar’s newest film, Brave, started passing through the movie community I was thrilled to hear that it would take place in the land of my heritage, Scotland. Though it tended to focus on the cliché aspects of Scottish culture such as bagpipes, kilts, Haggis and more, it also showcased the beauty of the land, and the strength of the country. Directed by Mark Andrews and starring the voice talents of Kelly McDonald, Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly, Brave was an entertaining film that the whole family can enjoy, yet not the best in the Disney/Pixar filmography.

Top Ten Disney Films from 1990 to the Present

By: Emily Kellas

With the re-release of The Lion King in theaters using the 3D format, it got us here at Reel 2 Reality thinking about the best Disney films from our childhood to the present. As a child of the 90′s I’m fairly partial to those films that bring me back to my living room floor, a sippy cup, and a baggie of pretzels. With that said, some new films make the list for reminding me that you are never to old to be a kid! So check out my list of the Top Ten Disney Films from 1990 to the present day… I dare you not sing along to at least one song!

The Lion King (3D) Review

Rating: 10 out of 10

By: Emily Kellas

Without fail every time the sun rises over the lush African safari and the chorus strikes up, chills run down my spine, and awe crosses my face. The Lion King, originally released in 1994, was re-released in theaters this weekend in 3D. I’ll admit my skepticism about the technology and the way it would affect this beloved film, but to my surprise it truly made for a thrilling theater experience. Sitting in that creaky chair staring up at the screen, it felt as if I had never grown up, as if I had remained four years old for the last 17 years. Directed by Roger Allers, and Rob Minkoff the film is voiced by the talents of Matthew Broderick, Jonathon Taylor Thomas, Jeremy Irons, and James Earl Jones. As this re-release proves a good movie remains good and becomes phenomenal as time pushes forward and new generations of movie-goers fall in love with it all over again.

Tron: Legacy Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 8.5 out of 10

In 1984, Tron changed the perception of film. With new-age special effects and a storyline involving the technological revolution, Tron became a cult hit. Over twenty years later the Tron series continues with Tron: Legacy, a film that steps the ante up once again. With fantastic visuals, a good storyline and fine performances, Tron: Legacy is a good distraction at the cinemas.

Tangled Review

By: Emily Kellas

Rating: 9 out of 10

This week Disney’s newest foray into the land of make believe comes out on DVD and BLU-RAY. Tangled is an adorable film based on the old fashion story of Rapunzel, with a modern punch. With its release Tangled ushers in a whole new era for the Disney studio with its switch to a combination of traditional animation and CGI graphics. After a bit of a dry spell with their traditional films (those lacking the extremely popular Pixar), Disney may has gotten back on track with this endearing and hilarious re-telling.

Mars Needs Moms Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 4 out of 10

When reviewing anything is part of your job, it isn’t all filet mignons and “Black Swans.”  As a movie reviewer, for every “True Grit” I get the privilege of watching, there are five “S.W.A.T.s” I have to sit through. (FYI, “S.W.A.T.” was one of my least favorite movies ever.)  Unfortunately for me, Mars Needs Moms fell into the latter category.
