What would you do if you were a kid that could see ghosts? 2009’s Coraline helped usher in a new generation of stop-motion films and has set the standard for 3D stop-motion film making. Paranorman, made in the same stop-motion fashion, succeeds in every way by pulling together a strong, meaningful story with outstanding animation, resulting in a surprisingly effective animated film that ranks among the year’s best.

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy helped re-invent the epic film in the early 21st century. Several trilogies and film series have attempted to replicate the scope of the original LOTR trilogy, but none have been able to quite achieve the emotional and visual level of accomplishment that Jackson’s classic trilogy earned. Peter Jackson has returned with his rendition of The Hobbit, kicking off his new trilogy with An Unexpected Journey. Although not the best in the line of Jackson’s adaptations of Tolkien, An Unexpected Journey still has much to be enjoyed and sets the foundation for what seems to be another solid trip to Middle-Earth.
The fact that this movie was not a complete disaster is an accomplishment in itself.
After a widely despised existence from conception to post-production, The Amazing Spider-Man ends up being a faithful and surprisingly enjoyable re-imagining of the franchise that Sam Raimi has defined in the last decade. A strong cast, streamlined plot and pure summer popcorn enjoyment all come together to make one of the better movies in 2012, although it is very unlikely that this film will be as widely loved and revered as the original trilogy due to the redundant plot.
The found-footage genre has absolutely exploded over the last few years, giving both outstanding examples of the application of the genre (Cloverfield) along with some of the worst (The Devil Inside). Now that all of the gimmicks have been run through, filmmakers are doing their best to get creative. Chronicle is another genre-defining film, offering not only a good found-footage spectacle but also one of the better superhero films of the last few years.
Hey folks, Monty here. A few weeks ago (sorry for the delay), the first trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s newest film Django Unchained hit the web. The film stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a freed slave who joins Dr. King Shultz (Christoph Waltz), a German Dentist turned bounty hunter. Leonardo DiCaprio also stars in the film, due out on Christmas Day. Check it out and feel free to post your thoughts below!
Ridley Scott’s Alien was the pioneering film that kick-started the present generation of science fiction, outer space films. Blade Runner only cemented Scott’s legacy as an incredible and talented filmmaker. In 2012 eager fanboys awaited with bated breath his next foray into science fiction. Prometheus hit theaters to a wide array of anticipation, rewarding its viewers with an beautiful and engrossing, albeit somewhat confusing and convoluted story surrounding the origins of creation.
