Taken from www.impawards.comAbraham Lincoln.

The United States’ 16th president is one of the most iconic figures in American history and he finally has a movie worthy of his impact.

Director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner (inspired by Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of AbrahamLincoln) put together a fantastic movie that features an outstanding cast headlined by an all-time performance from Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln.

Flight Review

Rating: 7 out of 10

Taken from www.impawards.comOh, those tricky marketers.

Watching the trailers for Flight,  it would be easy to assume that this film is more about disaster and mystery, but the reality is it is about addiction — and is better off for it.

The Amazing Spider-Man Review #2

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 9 out of 10

It seems like every other movie that is released nowadays is a re-boot or re-imagining of a franchise, and the result is a mixed bag.

For every X-Men: First Class (which is good) there is a film like A Nightmare on Elm Street (which was, you guessed it, horrible).

Given that mixed bag of films, it was no surprise that many people were skeptical of Columbia’s decision to re-boot its cash-cow franchise Spider-Man.

Luckily for movie-goers, The Amazing Spider-Man tops the 2002 version of Spidey in every way imaginable.

Madea’s Witness Protection Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 1 out of 10

In my 26 years, I have watched some fantastic movies. I have also watched some real stinkers as well. The only negative thing about reviewing movies is that you have to take the good with the bad. Up until July 1, 2012, I had never contemplated leaving a movie theater before the film was done. That was all before I took my first plunge into a Tyler Perry/Madea movie.

Brave review #2

When it comes to animated movies in the past 20 years, Pixar is the unquestioned king of the hill.

From its first feature film Toy Story in 1995, Pixar has been the benchmark for animated feature films.

Think that is just my opinion? While my opinion should be more than enough, here are some facts and statistics to back up the above claims.

Pixar films have made more than $7 billion. Pixar has won 26 Academy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards and three Grammy Awards.

Aside from Cars 2, which was the black sheep of the Pixar family critically speaking, a Pixar flick is about as safe a bet as there is in the movie industry and its most recent offering, Brave, is no exception.

That’s My Boy review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 2 out of 10

Think of your favorite comedy film and the first time you viewed it.

The odds are that so much laughing occurred that it felt like you had an ab-workout.

Now fast forward to your fifth viewing of it. You know all of the punch lines, what is going to happen, and thus the laughs are few and far between.

That doesn’t mean you like the film any less, but that the humor has grown stale.

Unfortunately for Adam Sandler, that is the case for his newest film That’s My Boy.

The Avengers Review #2

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 10 out of 10

Much like writing an English paper, there is a certain formula for writing a movie review.

Just like you learned in middle school, the introduction needs to grab the attention of readers. In reviews that is done by being, or at least trying to be, clever and witty.

The gut-busting beginning is followed by a quick sentence or two about the reviewer’s opinion on the movie. The meat of the review is analyzing the story, camera work, acting and anything that makes the film stand out.

The conclusion puts a nice little bow on the entire thing, and gives a summary of the beauty of what the reader just read.

In most cases, the above formula works out just fine. With a movie like The Avengers, however, a new approach is needed.

The Raven Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 4 out of 10

One of the unfortunate trends in Hollywood is the remaking or re-imagining of movies.

From The Karate Kid to Total Recall to Judge Dredd, theaters are being flooded with rehashed movies.

The breaking point for me is when Lionsgate is going to make a new Dirty Dancing. That is near blasphemous. That is a movie that should NEVER be messed with, unless it is to improve the original (like Blu-ray).

Technically, The Raven isn’t a remake, but after watching the film I had a strange feeling of deja vu. After returning from the theater, I went to my movie collection and the riddle was solved. The Raven reminded me so much of From Hell.

The Hunger Games Review #2

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 9 out of 10

I think there is something to watching a TV show or movie without reading the book or series it is based on first.

Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are all examples of movies or TV shows that got me hooked via a screen. After watching those respective franchises, I got hooked by each respective book series, but, without the TV or movie theater, I would have probably never gotten into any of them.

Chronicle Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 9 out of 10

As anyone who knows me and my movie-viewing habits knows, I am a big fan of super-hero movies.

Those same people know that I view found-footage films much the same as I do combs — useless for the most part (just look at my caricature for proof).

Naturally “Chronicle” was a dilemma for me. Do I take the plunge and hope that the super-hero aspect of the film helps me forget that it is being shot in a way I can’t stand?

I decided to take the plunge and watch “Chronicle” and I couldn’t be more pleased with what I landed in. “Chronicle” is a welcome deviation from the traditional super-hero format and as such, should be applauded.
