Brave review #2

When it comes to animated movies in the past 20 years, Pixar is the unquestioned king of the hill.

From its first feature film Toy Story in 1995, Pixar has been the benchmark for animated feature films.

Think that is just my opinion? While my opinion should be more than enough, here are some facts and statistics to back up the above claims.

Pixar films have made more than $7 billion. Pixar has won 26 Academy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards and three Grammy Awards.

Aside from Cars 2, which was the black sheep of the Pixar family critically speaking, a Pixar flick is about as safe a bet as there is in the movie industry and its most recent offering, Brave, is no exception.

That’s My Boy review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 2 out of 10

Think of your favorite comedy film and the first time you viewed it.

The odds are that so much laughing occurred that it felt like you had an ab-workout.

Now fast forward to your fifth viewing of it. You know all of the punch lines, what is going to happen, and thus the laughs are few and far between.

That doesn’t mean you like the film any less, but that the humor has grown stale.

Unfortunately for Adam Sandler, that is the case for his newest film That’s My Boy.

Retro Review: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

By: Emily Kellas

Rating: 9 out of 10

The last film that Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn made together was perhaps one of their most prolific. 1967’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a romantic comedy/drama that explores the mostly untouched world of interracial romance. Directed by Stanley Kramer and starring Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier, and Katherine Houghton Guess Whose Coming to Dinner chronicles a family trying to figure out a changing, yet stubborn, world.

Brave Review

By: Emily Kellas

Rating: 7 out of 10

When word of Disney/Pixar’s newest film, Brave, started passing through the movie community I was thrilled to hear that it would take place in the land of my heritage, Scotland. Though it tended to focus on the cliché aspects of Scottish culture such as bagpipes, kilts, Haggis and more, it also showcased the beauty of the land, and the strength of the country. Directed by Mark Andrews and starring the voice talents of Kelly McDonald, Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly, Brave was an entertaining film that the whole family can enjoy, yet not the best in the Disney/Pixar filmography.

John Carter Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 7 out of 10

It was the series that preceded Star Wars, Indiana Jones and all of the subsequent science fiction/action sagas that define the last two generations in film. Even Avatar was directly influenced by a series that began in the 20th century and has now been finally brought to the screen courtesy of Disney’s John Carter. This box-office bomb doesn’t misfire completely, rather falling victim to its source material and the constant influence it has had over the last century.

Underworld: Awakening Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 4.5 out of 10

This series should have stayed dead, now what few fans are left are only around. Unfortunately, those that remain are left to watch the garbage that is the Underworld series. After an entertaining and structured initial two installments, the Underworld series has gone in a complete free-fall, only further proven by the newest installment, Underworld:Awakening, a loud, dumb attempt at re-vitalizing a dead franchise and making a few dollars along the way.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 8 out of 10

The first Sherlock Holmes film awarded Robert Downey Jr. a Golden Globe award and was a box office success…hence cue the sequel. Fans were hoping for a film that closely matched the inquisitive-yet-new age feel of the first. A Game of Shadows is an action-packed spectacle that doesn’t quite match the original, but is still a very well executed, entertaining and exciting film in its own right.

Ridley Scott’s Alien was the pioneering film that kick-started the present generation of science fiction, outer space films. Blade Runner only cemented Scott’s legacy as an incredible and talented filmmaker. In 2012 eager fanboys awaited with bated breath his next foray into science fiction. Retro Review: Meet Me in St. Louis

By: Emily Kellas
Rating: 9 out of 10

A little over a week ago the film community celebrated what would have been the legendary Judy Garland’s 90th birthday. Turner Classic Movies celebrated by playing some of Garland’s greatest films all day long, and you know I was parked on my couch for its entirety. I fancy myself a Judy Garland fan, and always have. She was the first actress to lead me into the world of classic film. Her fragility, comedic timing, relatable characters, and mind-blowing talent impressed me even as a kid. Though The Wizard of Oz remains in my top five favorite movies of all time, it is not my favorite Judy Garland film. Meet Me in St. Louis features a “teenage” Judy Garland at the top of her game. Though rumored to have not wanted to make the film, Judy did, and she later admitted it became one of her favorites.
