Green Lantern Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 5.5 out of 10

The last 10 years have been the resurgence of the superhero film.  There had to eventually be a runt of the litter.  Although a high amount of films came out that disappointed the public such as Ghost Rider, Daredevil and Elektra, none of those films were released during the summer season, and as a result carried a high amount of buzz. Green Lantern was DC’s one shot to bring a memorable character to the screen that wasn’t Superman or Batman, but unfortunately a poor story and overall poor effort by all involved make the film mediocre at best.

The Stand: The Social Network or Catfish?

By: Mark DiStefano

One year ago, The Social Network was nominated for awards across the board, including several Best Picture nods. This film not only depicts the rise of Facebook, but it also shows how our generation began to depend on social networking as a substitute for verbal communication. However, can The Social Network really be the ultimate film that not only represents current technology, but the status of the current generation as well? Another film, Catfish, a documentary released in August of 2010, is up to challenge the popular counterpart. Which one is the real Facebook movie?

The Thing Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 6.5 out of 10

One of the cornerstones of the 1950s emergence of the monster movie was The Thing.  The film was remade in 1982 by John Carpenter, and is widely seen as one of the best films of the era.  As is customary in Hollywood over the last ten years, The Thing has now been re-booted as a prequel to the Carpenter classic for a modern audience in a mediocre adaptation.  Although it provides more than a few scares and thrills, The Thing fails to produce anything that will stick for more than one viewing.

The Ides of March Review

By: Bryan Montgomery
Rating: 8 out of 10

Films involving politics are always a mixed bag.  Often, the film is either too complicated or long winded to maintain the attention of the audience.  That is why when a film manages to enter cinemas that is not only entertaining but engaging, attention should be paid and accomplishment should be recognized.  The Ides of March is a strong film that is powered by its all-star cast, strong script and intriguing plot.

Dream House Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 4 out of 10

Heading into Dream House (DH) I had high expectations for the film, mainly because it featured Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz.

Ninety minutes later, however, I left the theater wishing I had watched 50/50 instead.

Dream House isn’t terrible, but the final 20 minutes of the film completely ruin a great foundation.

Drive Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 9 out of 10

Everyone’s list is different and there really is no wrong way to put it together, unless it includes Pauly Shore.

My list includes Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe and Steve Carrell. Tom Hanks used to be on top of my list, but his recent work has been lacking.

What list am I talking about? The list of actors or actresses that I will watch no matter what movie they are in. The lucky few who make my list have a proven track record of making films I enjoy and that’s the only requirement for making my list.

After watching Drive recently, my list expanded to include Ryan Gosling.

Retro Review: Footloose

By: Emily Kellas

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Its time to cut footloose again people, as the 80’s teen cult favorite comes back to theaters in a brand new remake. So for this week’s retro review I’m going to take a look at the original film, Footloose, starring the incomparable Kevin Bacon. Only two degrees away from Mr. Bacon I admit I’m biased towards the original and that the remake has some big sneakers to fill, but it’s the story that every new generation of teens can connect with. The 1984 classic directed by Herbert Ross made Kevin Bacon famous, and continues to inspire sporadic basement dance parties everywhere.

50/50 Review

By: Lawrence Foster
Rating: 9 out of 10

50/50 is an appropriate title for this film in more than one way. The title represents the odds that Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a 27-year-old stricken with cancer will survive.

The title also represented the odds that it could blend Seth Rogen’s brand of humor with the seriousness of Adam’s disease. Luckily, director Jonathan Levine crafts a film that balances the laughs with Adam’s life or death battle with cancer. In fact, the argument can be made that 50/50 is the best film of the year.
